The historic live oaks
We, the residents, are deeply embedded in the charm and history of Old Jefferson (Jefferson Parish), Louisiana, where Live Oaks have stood for centuries. These remarkable trees, many over 400 years old, symbolize strength, endurance, and beauty. Their presence is an integral part of our community's identity.
Live Oaks are crucial, not just for their symbolism, but for their environmental benefits. According to the U.S. Forest Service, a single mature oak tree can absorb about 50 pounds of CO2 per year, making them vital allies against climate change (U.S. Forest Service). In addition, their deep root system absorbs rain water and aids in the prevention of local flooding. Moreover, these trees form an essential part of our cultural heritage, anchoring us in our shared past and offering a habitat for many birds and communal spaces for future generations.
OJCA thanks member Ellen Deaden and mentor and supporters Shelley Ferro of JP Urban Tree and Coleen Perilloux Landry of Live Oak Society of the Louisiana Garden Club Federation for their advocacy to save lives oaks in Jefferson Parish and the greater New Orleans region.
The Louisiana Landmarks Society just included the New Orleans Trees' Canopy as 1 of 9 most endangered sites in 2024, https://www.louisianalandmarks.org/news/2024/9/24/new-orleans-nine-most-endangered-sites-of-2024. A quote from the article "Our city's tree canopy has dwindled to 18.5%, with recent damage due to negligent public works and utility projects affecting street trees, including iconic oaks. Tree loss intensifies flooding and heat island effects."
